5 Qualities to Look for in a Real Estate Agent

Buying or selling a home or property is a huge decision.  Be sure to put it in the hands of a professional that has these top five sought out qualities.

Attention- If your real estate agent is not giving you the attention that you require then you may want to continue “shopping.”  It is important that your agent is attentive, and returns all phone calls and emails in an appropriate period of time.  The real estate agent makes a living helping you buy or sell your home, so make them work for the commission that they will receive.  Your relationship with a real estate agent will likely last a few months while you search, wait through escrow and sign all closing documents…so be sure you are comfortable with your agent.

Character- Although you may not be able to do a background check on your real estate agent, it is the best option to get to know them before entering into a buyer/seller relationship with one.  Don’t feel obligated to use the first available agent, seek out one that has an honest reputation.  You want to find an agent that has your best interests in mind.

Licensed- Seek out a licensed professional to help you purchase or sell your home.  They should be well trained in helping you with any real estate questions and have no complaints against them.  Be sure to ask to see licensing documents before choosing a real estate agent.

Knowledge- A knowledgeable agent will know the home selling and buying market trends. Whether you are interested in purchasing or selling a property, a real estate agent should be able to help determine when the best time to begin searching or placing your home on the market will be.

Experience- All real estate agents should be knowledgeable…even fresh from getting their real estate license.  However, experience has to be gained through time.  Agents will learn from numerous interactions with clients, filling out paperwork, asking questions and from making mistakes.  Although no purchase or sell is completely predictable, an experienced agent will be your best asset.
